As a Recreation Coordinator, you will carry out our mission to improve the experience of aging together by coordinating, organizing and carrying out therapeutic recreation/activity programs and services to meet the recreational, social, religious, cultural and educational needs of residents and their families' needs in order to maximize quality of life and quality of care.

What will I do as a Recreation Coordinator?

  • Lead scheduled recreational activities including classes, games, music, entertainment, religious services, and specialized therapies. Ensure that programs are age-appropriate, non-threatening and successfully communicated.
  • Assist in organizing and implementing special events including holiday celebrations, monthly birthday parties, cookouts and other special events involving residents, families, guests, and the community. Assist with making arrangements and coordinating with other departments including Nursing regarding resident attendance and availability, and Dining Services to plan menus and coordinate meal service for those attending events. Provide support for pastoral services. Assist with maintaining monthly birthday list. Assist with arrangement for recognition of resident's birthday if desired.
  • Plan and schedule various trips and community outings such as shopping, eating out, events and outside functions. Accompany residents to and from outside locations. Assist residents in participating. Communicate with point of contact at the destination.
  • Plan individualized, patient-centered one-to-one programming for residents who are confined or choose to remain in their rooms. Ensure that visits provide for sensory and mental stimulation and socialization. Such visits may include reading, doing fingernails, companionship, conversation, etc. Arrange for reading materials.
  • Complete recreation documentation for residents in assigned units. Record residents' attendance and participation in individual and group activities. Report unusual or inappropriate behaviors to nursing staff. Communicate residents' concerns and responses to interventions to Director of Recreation.
  • Complete recreation assessments and update progress notes. Create an individualized care plan for each resident for the discipline of Recreation that incorporates resident choices, preferences, functional capacity and customary routines in activities. Attend quarterly and annual care plan meetings for assigned residents.
  • Escort residents to and from activities and programs. Operate equipment safely, according to established procedures. Assist residents with participation in activities and programs.
  • Assist in training and orienting volunteers, students, and groups regarding their roles in recreation programming. Work with Community Relations regarding the placement of volunteers in recreation programs. Work with volunteers by assigning their duties.

What is required in this position?

  • Requires High School diploma or equivalent; Associate's degree in arts or recreation is preferred.
  • Requires 3 years' experience in a social or recreational program within long-term care, assisted living, medical adult day service, senior center, or working with the geriatric population within the last 5 years.
